Armory Joins Continuous Delivery Foundation as Founding Member

Spinnaker is rapidly being chosen by enterprises as the open-source software delivery platform used to modernize their application deployments. Today marks a monumental day in the continued growth and adoption of Spinnaker. The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today announced the formation of a new foundation for the diverse continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) space.

The Continuous Delivery Foundation (CDF) will serve as the vendor-neutral home for the most important open source projects for continuous delivery and specifications to expedite the release pipeline process. CDF will foster collaboration between the industry’s top developers, end users, and vendors to evangelize CI/CD and DevOps methodologies, define/document best practices, provide guidelines, and create training materials to enable any software development team around the world to implement CI/CD best practices.

What Does this Mean for Spinnaker?

Spinnaker will be one of a handful of inaugural projects — including Jenkins, Jenkins X, and Tekton — to be hosted by the CDF. Until now, Spinnaker was an open source project originally led and governed by Netflix and Google. What the CDF brings to the table is a level of focus, governance and scale that will drive innovation and worldwide adoption of the project.

The CDF is an open source foundation. This means it will have an open governance model that encourages participation and technical contribution and will provide a framework for long-term stewardship and sustainability for CI/CD tools that are part of the foundation. This is great for Spinnaker as it will provide the infrastructure and marketing support required to push Spinnaker to the next level of mainstream adoption.

The Importance of Open Source to Armory

Open source is core to the fabric of what Armory is all about. As such, we believe it’s our role as a company focused on the success of an open source project in Spinnaker, to serve as a champion for the Spinnaker community. So we made the decision to join the CDF as a founding member, along with 17 other technology innovators and thought leaders including Alibaba, Capital One, Google, Netflix, Red Hat, and others, with the goal of working with the community to foster the adoption of innovative software delivery practices.

“Spinnaker powers the core of Armory's platform. We have brought Spinnaker into more Global 2,000 enterprise environments than any other company,” said DROdio, CEO of Armory. “The formation of the CDF will only accelerate the widespread adoption of Spinnaker across the enterprise and we look forward to our role in the CDF to help make that happen.”

Now as an active participant in the CDF and Spinnaker project, we will be able to more effectively partner with other industry leaders and define standards and interfaces for how software is delivered to multi-cloud environments.
